together with a bunch of kids we experimented in the backyard with paints, seals, hand-carved wood block stamps from India, potatoes.. yum. we dyed our t-shirts and many other things. on chairs, stools, on the grass, everywhere we could as there were a lot of us. then we fixed products of our work by ironing – and voilá! you can even wash them. location: Kielce. details: a lot of details ↓ [photomosaic link=”none” ids=”135,136,137,138,139,140,141,142,143,144,145,146,147,148″]
we were welcomed by: “always wear your rubber boots while papermaking” :) so sweet. in May we had the chance to spend some time in Chicago Center for Book Arts. and we will definitely go back. it’s a wonderful place for every paper geek. more than a school – it’s a huge creative space equipped with everything that one could possibly use for making and processing paper (or in general: cellulose fibers in many different forms). a great place – the whole space is waterproof, there are showers on the ceiling very handy indeed (this is something I really wish I had at Rajtarska) and a huge drain in the middle of the floor. hence the rubber boots and aprons for everyone. an a PULP is a fibrous solution from which a sheet – or anything else – is formed. in that workshop pulp had its own privacy policy and a separate fridge … you could easily feel its undoubted importance. since in the paper art everything stars with good pulp, obviously :) for some bedside reading quarterly journal PULP news [photomosaic link=”none” ids=”200,201,202,203,204,205,206,207,208,209,210
text is about message of course, but – its form can make the message stronger, add another dimensions – not only esthetical or spatial. after all that’s one of the reasons why we have typography.. generally speaking :) I had the great pleasure of visiting a typography studio: fonts, lots of fonts, paints, linocuts and chalcography, appliances, huge machines which names I don’t even know. beautiful inspiring place. and silent, work in silence. take a look (…) [photomosaic link=”none” ids=”184,185,186,187,188,189,190,191,192,193,194,195,196″]
during winter time we moved our papermaking business to our house: to the old cellar with an arched ceiling. we’ll stay here till summer, there isn’t much room here but it’s warm. it’s after all the most inspiring place in our house. oh and we’ve got the entire assortment of young artist’s tools here: brushes, all sorts of paints, processed fibers, corks, boxes, sponges, trinkets, scraps, everything – truly everything. and what’s more, there’s a big press – not only for bookbinding – that’s vintage mangle wringer and a (funded) paper cutter. and plenty of kids to make it complete. we officially initiate the paper season 2012 – tones of joy, kids everywhere and creative paper bordello on the grass. together we recycled our old papers, colour papers left from kid’s art classes at school and office papers straight from the paper shredder. we also made paper from (previously processed) local plant fibers and we experimented with ingredients – adding flower petals from our garden, leafs or any other tidbits we found in the grass. then boys found our old djembe :) finally there was a camp fire & after*party. obligatorily [photomosaic link=”none” ids=”116,117,118,119,120,121,122,123,124,125,126,127,128,129″]
our workshop received funding from the European Social Fund. thanks to that funding we could buy the best hi-tech equipment for our visual studio :) we ordered also wooden molds & deckles – forms for papermaking in different shapes and sizes; we bought a new big paper cutter + good quality blender which serves us as ”Hollander beater”. we purchase as well a lot of colourful accessories for kids: felt, containers, natural dyes and so on. we feel obligated to make the best use of these treasures. and would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ms Union
